Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S Lens Officially Announced

Nikon has officially unveiled the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S, a notable addition to its lineup of full-frame fast prime lenses. This new offering is particularly appealing to photographers seeking a shallow depth of field while still capturing a sense of the surrounding environment—something more challenging with Nikon’s 50mm and 85mm f/1.2 lenses.

As the first 35mm f/1.2 lens in Nikon’s S-line, it stands out as an exceptional tool for event photography, documentary work, lifestyle shoots, and environmental portraits. This lens completes Nikon’s trio of f/1.2 prime lenses, alongside the 50mm and 85mm variants, offering photographers a versatile range from wide-angle to telephoto. Together, these lenses provide excellent subject isolation, complemented by smooth, aesthetically pleasing bokeh. The wide f/1.2 aperture ensures remarkable performance even in low-light conditions, making it highly versatile.

Optically, the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S is constructed with 17 elements in 15 groups, including three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements, three aspherical elements, and one aspherical ED element. This advanced design helps minimize chromatic aberrations and distortions while enhancing image clarity and sharpness. Nikon has also applied specialized coatings to reduce flare and ghosting, ensuring high contrast and vibrant color fidelity even in challenging lighting situations. However, unlike some other lenses, it lacks a fluorine coating on the front element, which would have provided additional protection against moisture and oils.

The autofocus system is driven by dual stepping motors, delivering fast, precise, and quiet focusing—ideal for both still photography and video recording. The lens features a minimum focusing distance of 0.3 meters (11.8 inches), allowing for detailed close-up shots. For added convenience, it includes a clickless control ring and dual function buttons, accessible in both portrait and landscape orientations.

Despite its advanced capabilities, the lens is relatively large and heavy, weighing 1,060 grams and supporting an 82mm filter size. Its robust build includes dust and moisture sealing, enhancing durability for outdoor and demanding shooting conditions.

Nikon targets this lens at professionals engaged in weddings, events, fashion, and video production. However, its unique characteristics, especially the rare combination of a wide-angle view with such a fast aperture, are likely to attract photography enthusiasts as well. Nikon has highlighted that this level of optical performance would have been impossible with the older, narrower F-mount system.

The NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S will be available later this month, with a retail price of $2,799.
