Ricoh Confirms GR IV Launch for Autumn 2025, Featuring New Sensor, Lens, and HDF Variant

Ricoh has officially announced the development of the GR IV, signaling a new era for its iconic GR series of fixed lens compact cameras. Expected to launch later this year, the GR IV builds on the legacy of its predecessors and introduces exciting advances for both enthusiasts and professionals.

One of the major highlights is the introduction of a new HDF version—featuring a built-in highlight diffusion filter—to offer users even more creative control. Both the standard and HDF models will debut significant hardware updates, including a brand-new lens, sensor, and processor. At the heart of the GR IV lies a 25.74MP APS-C sensor, which is likely based on the same highly regarded 26MP BSI chip found in Sony a6700. This signals an impressive step forward in image quality and detail.

The camera sports an 18.3mm F2.8 lens (28mm full-frame equivalent), equipped with a 2EV ND filter and a sophisticated optical construction featuring seven elements in five groups, three of which are aspherical. Users can also look forward to five-axis image stabilization, a wide shutter speed range (1/4000–30 seconds), and a substantial 53GB of internal storage—complemented by a UHS-I Micro SD card slot. Additional features include a 3.0-inch 1.037M-dot LCD and Full HD video recording up to 60p, all packed into a compact, lightweight body weighing just 262g.

While Ricoh is still deciding whether to integrate a built-in flash, the GR IV is set to become the flagship as production of the GR III concludes in July 2025. The GR IIIx model will continue to be available for the foreseeable future.

Over a history of nearly three decades (since the introduction of the film camera, RICOH GR1 in 1996), and two decades (since the introduction of the first digital-format GR DIGITAL in 2005), the GR series has always kept the basic concept of pursuing the essential values of a camera: high image quality, quick response and portability.
