Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 Lens Officially Announced

Nikon has officially announced the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4, marking its first f/1.4 lens for the Z-mount mirrorless system. Previously, Nikon’s prime lenses for this mount were mostly available in f/1.2, f/1.8, or f/2.8 variants.

The NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 is a wide-angle prime lens featuring a fast f/1.4 maximum aperture and is priced affordably at $599.95. This lens allows users to enjoy the benefits of a large aperture, such as soft bokeh and three-dimensional rendering that make subjects stand out. Its 35mm focal length is versatile, suitable for a variety of scenes including landscapes, snapshots, portraits, and close-ups of flowers and pets. With a minimum focus distance of 0.27 meters, users can capture detailed close-ups of subjects like food and flowers, creating images with pronounced background bokeh.

Despite its large aperture, the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 maintains a compact and lightweight design, measuring approximately 86.5 mm in length and weighing around 415 grams. This makes it comparable in size to the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S and convenient for daily use and quick snapshots. The lens boasts superior optical performance typical of NIKKOR Z lenses, delivering clear images with minimal chromatic aberrations. When shooting close-up portraits at maximum aperture, the lens produces soft rendering around the face while keeping the eyelashes sharply in focus. Stopping down the aperture for landscape shots results in sharp, detailed images, allowing photographers to achieve their desired imaging expression.

Interestingly, the Z 35mm f/1.4 is not part of Nikon’s premium ‘S’ line of lenses and is priced lower than the 35mm f/1.8 S, which originally retailed for $849. This new lens features a construction of eleven elements in nine groups, including two aspherical elements. Unlike other lenses, its specifications do not match any existing models, suggesting it is a unique design rather than a re-bodied version of another lens.

The lens uses a stepper motor for autofocus, typical of Z-mount lenses, and includes a customizable control ring. On full-frame cameras, the 35mm can be used as a slight wide-angle lens, while on Nikon’s DX APS-C cameras, it provides a 53mm equivalent focal length. The NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 will be available in mid-July at a recommended price of $599.95.
