Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 L II USM Lens currently under development?

CanonRumors suggests that Canon might be in the process of developing a successor to the RF 28-70mm F2 L USM lens, although the exact release date remains uncertain.

The original RF 28-70mm F2 L USM lens represented Canon’s innovative prowess, serving as a testament to their capabilities. It stands as one of the most highly regarded standard zoom lenses in the history of consumer optical equipment.

According to insider information, the upcoming lens boasts an improved optical design that not only enhances performance but also facilitates a significant reduction in weight. Considering this emphasis on lightweight construction, it’s conceivable that the successor may forego an image stabilization system (IS), relying instead on the camera’s in-body image stabilization (IBIS) for steady shots.

The original RF 28-70mm F2 L USM, introduced in Japan in February 2018, boasted a wide F2 aperture and a 9-blade diaphragm, delivering exquisite bokeh. Yet, its hefty weight of 1430g, exceeding 1kg, raised concerns. The successor’s potential weight reduction is thus a point of interest, particularly given its large 95mm filter diameter.

Given the focus on weight reduction, it’s unlikely that the RF 28-70mm II will incorporate IS. Nevertheless, the existing IBIS system is adept at stabilizing shots taken with this lens.

Looking ahead, it’s reasonable to anticipate Mark II iterations of early RF mount lenses in the coming years. Rumors also suggest an internal focus design update for the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM later this year.
