First Rumored Nikon Z50 II Specifications

Nikon is rumored to announce several new products in the coming months, with speculation pointing towards a successor to the “Z50” mirrorless camera. The Nikon Z50, a Z-mount APS-C (DX) mirrorless camera, was first released in Japan in November 2019. Given that nearly five years have passed since its launch, an update to this popular model seems timely.

The first rumored specifications for the Nikon Z50 II suggest several noteworthy changes and improvements. The camera is expected to feature an updated body design and will be powered by the new Expeed 7 processor, which should enhance overall performance. The addition of a flippy screen, similar to the one found on the recently announced Nikon Z6 III, will likely appeal to vloggers and content creators. Furthermore, the Z50 II is said to support USB-C connectivity, a welcome upgrade that aligns with modern standards for faster data transfer and charging. The camera is also expected to retain the Nikon EN-EL25 battery, which is the same as the current Z50 model.

Despite these enhancements, some aspects of the Z50 II remain unchanged or uncertain. Rumors suggest that it may use the same 20.9MP DX-format CMOS sensor found in the original Z50, although this has not been confirmed. There is hope among enthusiasts that Nikon might introduce a new, higher-resolution sensor, especially considering competitors like Fuji have already implemented a 40MP sensor in their latest X100VI model. However, if Nikon decides to keep the same sensor, it could be seen as a conservative move, focusing more on incremental improvements rather than a complete overhaul.

Another point of interest is the lack of a battery grip option for the Z50 II. This omission aligns with the positioning of the Z50 series as an entry- to mid-range model; battery grips are typically reserved for higher-end cameras. Moreover, the Z50 II is expected to be compatible with Nikon’s new Imaging Cloud, a service that automatically transfers images to various cloud platforms and keeps the camera’s firmware up to date. Currently, only the Nikon Z6 III is compatible with this service, but Nikon has plans to expand support to more models, including the Z50 II.

While there have been no significant discounts on the current Nikon Z50 model, these may start appearing soon, likely in anticipation of the Z50 II’s official announcement, expected before the end of 2024.
